"Life in Ithilien was hard for those guarding Gondor against spies and raiders coming from the Emyn Muil. When Baradwin's father, a sergeant and one of the last members of the once-noble Girithlin family, was slain by a goblin's arrow, his next-of-kin moved to Osgiliath, trying to make a living by repairing shoes and clothes in the poorer quarters of the city.

When Osgiliath was under siege, young Baradwin fled to the north with his old and diseased mother. After her death, Baradwin vowed to avenge his parents and travelled through Eriador, in search of a worthy enemy... and a glorious death."
