Steven Erickson indeed. The man is obviously mad, since with over 4,000 pages to date he is still only 7/10ths of the way through the Malazan saga, with the inevitable result that even he sometimes gets confused, never mind his often baffled readers. On the other hand he writes extremely well, has created what is probably the densest and most complex fictional world ever, and as a professional anthropologist has a very convincing way with myth structures. I am slowly re-reading the entire series to date, and I have to say it all (well, most of it) starts making more sense the second time around; whether Erickson can expect similar determination from the majority of his readers is, however, a moot point. It helps if you remember that he is following two separate but parallel major plot lines in alternate volumes (there are, of course, numberless secondary plots and time-lines).

I suspect that when the series is completed what will finally emerge, among many other things, is a philosophical disquisition on the evils of empire and their root causes; "Midnight Tides"  already included (alongside much sword and sorcery, of course) a fairly sophisticated consideration of the economic roots of imperial expansion, in which the reader may or may not wish to see parallels with the USA today.

Incidentally, as you probably know, Malazan was first conceived by Erickson as the background to an extremely complex version of Dungeons & Dragons. While this never actually happened, imagine how awesome an online version of the saga could be...
