Kreiken almost sounds like Kraken. The Kraaaaaaken!! You know, there are kraken. In the form of the Colossal squid! Longer than a blue whale, they are. They also have found dead whales with huge suction marks on them - which suggests they fight epic undersea battles! Much like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea!

Errr...

Welcome!

Hahah, Maurv! Your hilarious.
I first heard of the Kraken in Pirates of The Caribbean, but I thought it was a myth, is there evidence that it actually exists?  :o
Anyway...Welcome and well met, Arolie!  ;D

"Kraken" is a Scandinavian mythological beast, as ancient as tales of sea monsters (which are pretty ancient). Booo for not having heard of one, before! Scholars believe the widespread myths of sea monsters are related to groups of whales, when surfacing, may resemble one giant creature with many "tentacles" or a "long neck." Personally I think that's a pretty lame suggestion as if we can tell it's several animals nowadays, we would as well, back then. But since there ARE colossal squid as a recognized species (no adult specimens are known, estimates based on juvenile remains are that it would be over 25 meters long and sizeable enough to fight with whales, due to pieces of squid tentacles found in sperm whale stomaches and heavily lacerated whales found dead drifted to shore), as well as an intriguing amount of plesiosaur remains around the coast of Norway, where, would you know it, the word originates from... oh, the theories fly!

But that's enough astonishing tales of the sea for one day.  Smile
